It’s Fiesta time in CDO with the approach of the Higalaay Festival. (Pronounced “Hig” as in Pig, “ala” as in al acarte and “ay” as in eye, Hig-ala-ay).
Formerly known as Kagay-an Festival, it is Cagayan de Oro’s, fiesta, and takes place on the 28th of August.
Initially the day was a celebration of the feast day of St. Augustine – patron saint of the city. However when the first cathedral, on the current site of the city, was completed on the same date in 1780, the excuse to celebrate doubled.
The fiesta is no longer a one day event and has become a festival with activities taking place throughout the month.
Here is the current program for the Higalaay Festival of 2016.
Higalaay Garden Show
The garden show is held at Duaw Kagay-an Park, which was revitalised in 2013, in order to bring back its historical significance as a living tribute to US-based Cagayanons who contributed to the city’s growth and progress over the years.
Comprising plant displays, water features and other gardening implements and supplies from gardeners and garden centers all over Mindanao and parts of the Visaya’s.
The area is a full of luxuriant growth, colors and amazing ideas.
You can buy or order all the items on display
To be held at Gaston Park just a short distance from the Garden Show.
This year’s fair will include produce grown by local agriculturists and include a showcase of agricultural implements used in the different barangays of Cagayan de Oro.
Both the Garden Show and the Agri Fair are places that gardeners of all persusions will pick up a lot of knowledge about growing conditions and plants that adapt successfully in the area.
Miss Cagayan De Oro 2016
As we mentioned in June you should look out for this. Well your opportunity is coming on the 13th of August at The Antrium in the Limketkai Center. The new Miss Cagayan de Oro will be crowned at 7pm. It is free and open to the public, be there at 6pm for a good view.
Sorry guys the swimsuit competition being held at Centrio Ayala Mall, on the 6th August is by invitation only.
Three days of competitive cooking is being held at the Antrium, in the Limketkai Cemter, on the 17, 18 and 19 August. The theme this year is “Cook Local, Taste Global”.
This is allegedly the longest running cooking competition in the Philippines, catering for both professional and student levels.
What will they cook? Secret!!!

The Cowboy Festival: The Annual Cagayan de Oro Horse Show
Taking place at P.N. Roa Property, Upper Carmen CDO on the 20 and 21st of August.
As well as the exceptional skills on show as CDO horsemen and women, engage in a number of fast moving shows of tenacity and strength in partnership with these amazing creatures.
It is your opportunity to get up close with prize horse flesh.
By that we mean you can ride, groom or pet some of the horse or get your family to do so.
Cagayan de Oro Carnival Parade
Held on the streets of Luna-Velez to Divisoria and starting at 4pm.
This is a competition about two things:
1. Choosing the most beautiful of the competing Carnival Queens. Now there is no peoples choice, but a glance at last years competitors would make it a worthwhile trip to to view the parade.
2. Finding the best Carnival Parade. Dress, dancing, music and attitude. Some of these artists are pushing all the envelopes

The Higalas Parade of Floats and Icons
This is a civic military parade featuring universities from the CDO environs, schools, police, businesses community groups, and various branches of the miltary.
I loved the depth and breadth of involvement, but especially the kids, uninhibited enjoyment.
The route is from Rodelsa Circle, then along Velez Street, to Limketkai Center. The parade starts at 7am on the 27th August
Those photographs should encourage you to find yourself a spot on the route. Park yourself with your favorite breakfast beverage and watch the parade go by.
If nothing else it will give you a sense of the fabric of this great city.
Bisperas Fireworks Display
This small but spectacular firework display, takes place in the Duaw Kagay-an Park at 8 pm on the 27th August.
(That is the same park where the Garden Show is situated)
Take the kids they will enjoy the spectacle.
Religious Procession Celebrating St Augustine
The procession is the official celebration of the feast day of the Patron Saint of CDO. It follows this route:
Fernandez St – Velez St. – Capistrano St. – St. Augustine Cathedral and starts at 4am
Kagay-an Pyro Music Festival
The annual Pyro Festival celebration is presented by SM City, Cagayan de Oro in partnership with the City of Cagayan de Oro and supported by the Department of Tourism Region 10. Held at the Pueblo de Oro Showgrounds. It aims to paint the sky with a colorful canvas of dancing lights, fireworks to a background of music, music music.
The Pyro Festival has become a favorite of Kagay-anons and tourists and part of the Festival’s tradition.
Last year thousands of people gathered to listen to a total of 7 different entrants in the Pyro Festival competition. Each showcasing their best compositions of light display and music.
The event started at 7pm closed around 9pm on the 28th August.

This is a river or sea procession involving boats, rather than vehicles, decorated as floats.
In 2015 there were 45 boats involved.
The route is Macajalar Bay – Cagayan River – Duaw Kagay-an Park, so find a riverbank and wile away a few hours watching the “float boats float by”.
Takes place on the 28th August, time to be announced.
